The original Duck Inn was founded in 1945, just as World War II was coming to a close. Unlike polished commercial restaurants, the Duck Inn began humbly and stayed that way. It was located in a converted three-bedroom residential house near Willow Grove Park, giving it a distinct "at home" atmosphere that patrons loved.

For decades, the restaurant was the go-to destination for anyone in Denton County craving authentic Southern fried catfish. It built its reputation on a simple, unbeatable formula: the best fried catfish around, legendary, world-famous hush puppies, and a secret tartar sauce recipe that was closely guarded by the Howard family, who created all of the original recipes still used to this day.

In 1998, the original Duck Inn closed its doors. At the time of its closing, it was touted as the oldest restaurant in Denton County. The closure left a void in the local community, with the famous recipes and the "Duck Inn" name under the Howard's management going dormant for over two decades.

The Revival 2025

After nearly 18 years of silence, the legend returned. It began with the sale of hush puppies at local farmer's markets which blossomed into full pop-up dinners at local businesses. In 2025, the brand was resurrected as Duck Inn Again, located at 303 Alamo Avenue in Lake Dallas.

While the original was a cozy house near the lake, the new iteration adapted to modern times, setting up shop in the old Lake Dallas City Hall. Despite the change in scenery, the spirit has remained rooted in hospitality and family dining. Duck Inn Again is focused on being a community hub, embracing the nostalgia of years past and  inviting the next generation of guests to make themselves at home, much like they did in the old house.

The "Again" in the name is a nod to its resilience and return. Today, Duck Inn Again bridges the gap between the past and present, offering a place where locals can enjoy the kind of Southern flavor that put Lake Dallas on the map back in 1945.
